On the south end of New York State, Long Island is a 150 mile long island, yet no more than 16 miles wide at it's
widest. That leave us plenty of coastline and some of the best beaches and harbors in the world. It also gives us
plenty of running and walking benefits. Fresh ocean breezes brings us clean air to breath and cool us when it's
hot. Long Island has plenty of parks, trails and open spaces to run and walk as well. The further east you go, the
more open it gets.

The western part of the Island is more crowded, the competition is greater. The east end is more laid back and
relaxed, at least most of the time. In the summer, the people from the west head east.

West to east, there are always plenty of races. Bob Anastasio's "LI Running" does a great job in collecting
running information from all parts of the island. The biggest and most organized club is by far the Greater Long
Island Running Club (GLIRC).

There are many other clubs all over Long Island and I encourage you to seek them out at LI Running and join
your local club as well as GLIRC. Support the clubs that support your sport. Better yet, volunteer to help out at the
races. We could all use an extra hand.

See you at the races.
